In 2013 the new car seat regulations UNR 129, i-Size was launched. A big step for children to travel safely in the car. i-Size is the first regulation which require that children have to be seated rearfacing to at least 15 months. Too short by Swedish standards but clearly a step in the right direction for the rest of Europe!


i-Size – to increase child safety in cars

The i-Size regulation is designed to ensure that children are traveling as safely in the car as possible through tougher and tougher crash tests. The requirements for child car seats can be summarized in six points:

  • Improved protection of the child by requiring side-impact protection and protection of the neck and head.
  • Tougher crash tests, including side-impact tests.
  • Mandatory that children should traveling rear facing to at least 15 months.
  • Reduced risk of incorrect installation due ISOfix “click in”.
  • Easier use regarding that i-Size approved car seats and i-Size approve cars always fitting together.
  • Based on the child’s height and age rather than weight.
