How does the seat perform with and without ISOfix?

The BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size is certified with and without the usage of the ISOfix anchorage. If available, it’s always better to use the ISOfix anchorage since it secures the seat better when there is no child in the seat (and the vehicle belt is not used to secure the seat without child). The safety performance is almost the same with or without the usage of the ISOfix anchorage.

What are the differences between iZi Flex S FIX and iZi Flex FIX i-Size?

iZi Flex S FIX is a slightly scaled down version of the premium iZi Flex FIX i-Size that was launched in March 2018. iZi Flex FIX i-Size has 4 features that iZi Flex S FIX does not have: the SIP+, PAD+, adjustable recline positions and the lapbelt guider. All other aspects, e.g. the space-adjustability or the seat dimensions, are identical between both seats.

What does the PAD+ do?

When children are buckled up with the vehicle seat belt, they often feel that the shoulder belt is ‘uncomfortable’, leading to a risk of positioning the shoulder belt incorrectly to avoid discomfort, e.g. by placing it underneath their arm. To avoid this risk of misuse and to increase comfort, the PAD+ softens the edge of the vehicle seat belt, padding it. Additionally, it also actively increases safety by acting as a cushioning bumper between the child’s chin and chest.

Can I also use the iZi Flex FIX i-Size without the detachable SIP bumpers?

Yes, in order to be able to facilitate several seats or people next to each other in a vehicle, the SIP bumpers of iZi Flex FIX i-Size can be detached. However, we recommend you to always keep the outer SIP bumper facing the vehicle door attached when having iZi Flex FIX i-Size installed on an outer vehicle seat position for an optimal safety performance. In addition, we recommend you to also attach the SIP+ onto the SIP bumper facing the vehicle door if there is space available for additional side impact protection.

Why does iZi Flex FIX i-Size feature the PAD+?

When children are buckled up with the vehicle seat belt, they often feel that the shoulder belt is ‘uncomfortable’, leading to a risk of positioning the shoulder belt incorrectly to avoid discomfort, e.g. by placing it underneath their arm. To avoid this risk of misuse and to increase comfort, the PAD+ of the iZi Flex FIX i-Size softens the edge of the vehicle seat belt, padding it. Additionally, it also actively increases safety by acting as a cushioning bumper between the child’s chin and chest.

Why does the iZi Flex FIX i-Size not have a weight limitation even if it is installed with ISOfix?

In a high back booster seat, the forces of the child are distributed to the vehicle through the vehicle belt in an impact, as the child is held by the vehicle belt. If a high back booster seat is installed with ISOfix, the ISOfix anchorages help keeping the seat itself in place in an impact but do not have to hold the child’s forces.

In contrast, ISOfix installed child car seats with an internal harness (where the child is secured with the seat’s own harness, not with the vehicle belt) always have a weight limitation, as the forces of both the child and the seat are distributed to the vehicle through the ISOfix anchorages only.

How and when can I use the reclining position of the seat? (iZi Flex FIX i-Size)

The recline position of iZi Flex FIX i-Size is designed to help your child lean back when sleeping in the car and thereby remain safely within the seat’s protection area and keeping the vehicle belt in the correct position.

Therefore, we recommend you to use iZi Flex FIX i-Size in its upright position when your child is awake but to use the seat’s recline position when your child starts getting sleepy.

The reclining position can be operated with the reclining handles on both sides of the seat. Do make sure to always pull the seat belt tight after changing from one position to the other to avoid slack in the belt.

How do I adapt the iZi Flex FIX i-Size to fit three seats/people in one row?

When installing an iZi Flex FIX i-Size on an outer vehicle seat, you can take the inner SIP bumper off in order to be able to fit several seats/people next to each other. When installing an iZi Flex FIX i-Size in the middle position in the vehicle, both SIP bumpers can be taken off if you would like to place other seats/people next to the iZi Flex FIX i-Size on both sides. When installing an iZi Flex FIX i-Size in the middle position in the vehicle but are only placing another seat/person next to it on one side, we recommend you to keep the other SIP bumper on the iZi Flex FIX i-Size.

Where can I find the car compatibility list / Why does iZi Flex FIX i-Size not have a compatibility list?

The BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size has no carlist, since this is not required according UN R129-02 and there are hardly any limitations to use iZi Flex FIX i-Size in vehicles.

As mentioned in the user manual there can be a limitation in the highest position of the headrest when the seat is used in the rear vehicle seats at the side because of the low roof in some vehicles. In these situations the seat can’t be used to the total height of 150 cm. This can sometimes be the case for sporty vehicles but rarely for family cars. We recommend you to always try out a seat before purchase to see if it fits to your specific situation.

In some vehicles it might not be possible to use the SIP+ due to lack of space at the door side of the seat, then it’s fine to use the seat without SIP+.

What is the SIP+ for?

The additional side impact protection SIP+ can be placed onto the side of the iZi Flex FIX i-Size facing the vehicle door to further enhance the side impact protection, yet the iZi Flex FIX i-Size has already passed the demanding crash test criteria of the UN R129-02 regulation without the SIP+. Its main function is to reduce the distance between the seat and the vehicle door, thereby enabling an earlier contact in a side impact that leads to less movement.

Three kids in a row, all 140 cm tall and the seat in the middle is without the bumpers… is the seat still approved/allowed? How to fix three seats in a row?

The iZi Flex FIX i-Size is approved in UN R129-02 without any additional SIP+ or SIP bumpers (at the inside of the vehicle). The SIP bumpers and the SIP+ improve the side impact performance and should always be used at the door side of the vehicle. Only when a third CRS is used in the middle position of the vehicle, may the SIP bumper be taken off, but only at the inside of the vehicle and not at the doorside.

The possibility to install three iZi Flex FIX i-Size seats in a row depends mainly on the car, and where the ISOfix anchorages are mounted in the seat of the car. If possible, use ISOfix for all three of the seats; this is normally only feasible in a vehicle with three seperate vehicle seats in the second row. If there is less space, or if there are only two ISOfix anchorages placed a bit out of line, you can use the BeSafe iZi Flex i-Size seats in combination with the vehicle belts only.

Is it dangerous to use the iZi Flex FIX i-Size without the removable SIPs?

In BeSafe, we always look for the best solutions and we design our car seats for real life situations – not only for pre-defined tests in a laboratory. Our experiences and tests have shown that the SIPs and the SIP+ gives the child improved safety, because they significally reduce the load on the child if a side impact should occur. Although the BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size is approved without them, you should always aim for the best safety for yourself and for your child. Therefore, we recommend that you always use the removable SIPs and SIP+ on the iZi Flex FIX i-Size towards the car door, as long as there is space available.

How should the iZi Flex FIX i-Size be adjusted to the child?

The iZi Flex FIX i-Size offers generous possibilities for adjustments, to fit children from 100 to 150 cm in height. The booster seat is also easily adjusted to the child’s height by use of one of the handles – there is one handle on each side so you can adjust it from any side. This can be done with the child sitting in the seat, so you can adjust it accurately and quickly. The headrest should be adjusted so the vehicle seat belt is guided 90 degrees through the shoulder belt guiders, over the child’s shoulders. You can also adjust the reclining feature of the iZi Flex FIX i-Size for a perfect sitting position – this must be done before you put on the seat belt, in order to avoid slack in the seat belt. The seat belt should be tightened properly, and the lap belt guider will put the seat belt in the right position over the child’s body.

Do I need to use the lap belt guider?

The lapbelt guider is optional to use as it only indirectly impacts the child’s safety. A child who is correctly placed in the seat travels safely with or without using it. However BeSafe’s recommendation is to always use it as we always recommend to use all precautions to minimize any safety risks.

Can the seat be used without ISOfix?

Yes, the BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size can absolutely be used without the ISOfix installed. But when ISOfix is available, you can use the ISOfix for securing the booster seat perfectly, even without a child sitting in it.

What does ‘specific vehicle’ mean?

The second phase of UN r 129 contains different categories: the ‘i-Size booster seat’ category and the ‘specific vehicle booster seat’ category.

The ‘specific vehicle booster seat’ category allows for widths above 44 cm, so that the fit in terms of height and width depends on the vehicle and should therefore always be tried out before purchase.

Specifically for stature heights above 135 cm, the headrest of the booster seat can in some cases touch the vehicle body. This is sometimes the case with sports car models but rarely with family cars. BeSafe recommends to test-install the seat in all positions in the vehicle you intend using it in and check the installation, available space in the vehicle and position of the child to see if it is acceptable for your situation.

What is i-Size?

The ‘i-Size’ regulations are a set of child restraint seat regulations, developed by the United Nations. These are the newest, most comprehensive regulations for child seats, that are meant to make it easier and safer to buy the correct car seat for your child. The i-Size regulations are stricter than older regulations, and are also designed to make it easier for consumers to find a car seat that will fit in their cars.

When can I stop using the booster seat?

The child should be secured in a booster seat for as long as possible, until their height reaches 150 cm. Please also check the official traffic regulations in your country, since some countries limit the usage up to 135 cm in height and some countries demand usage until a height of 150 cm.

Where to place the PAD+?

The PAD+ is installed around the vehicle´s shoulderbelt, as high as possible – so it touches the headrest.

Why an additional PAD+?

The PAD+ is an additional feature to improve comfort and safety, and should always be used with the iZi Flex FIX i-Size. One PAD+ is comes with the seat, and must be positioned on the vehicle´s shoulder belt. Comfort is improved by positioning a soft pad between the neck and the sharp edge of the shoulder belt. Safety is improved by positioning a soft pad between the chin and the chest to ‘soften’ the impact of the chin on the chest during a frontal impact. If you move the iZi Flex FIX i-Size from one vehicle to another, or from one side of the car to the other, you must also move the PAD+ with the seat.

Why is there no longer SIR (Side Impact Rotation)?

BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size is constructed to offer optimal side impact performance by offering energy absortion through a combination of EPS foam, SIP bumpers and SIP+. The construction doesn’t need any SIR to perform in an optimal way in the side impact.

Why only height and not weight?

In the UN r129 (‘i-Size’) regulations, the classification of car seats has changed from kilograms to centimetres, since parents often know more accurately how tall their child is. This makes it easier to choose the right (and safest) seat. The iZi Flex FIX i-Size is designed to secure a child in a great way through the entire height range, independent from the ISOfix related weight limitation.

Why the shape of the PAD+?

The shape of the PAD+ is carefully designed for the child’s safety and comfort. Comfort is improved by positioning a soft pad between the neck and the sharp edge of the shoulder belt. Safety is improved by positioning a soft pad between the chin and the chest to ‘soften’ the impact of the chin on the chest during a frontal impact.

Is it wrong to use the iZi Flex FIX i-Size without the removable SIPs?

What if I do not use the PAD+?

The PAD+ is a part of the safety system of the booster seat, and should always be used as an ‘integrated’ part of the BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size. Without the PAD+, the safety performance will be lessened.
